United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kosovo and the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports (MCYS)  formalised an agreement to expand the Internship  programme to provide opportunities for graduated  young men and women registered as jobseekers at the Public Employment Service in Kosovo in response to COVID 19 impact on youth socio-economic conditions. The Programme is implemented by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare  (MLSW)- Kosovo Employment Agency (KEA) jointly with UNDP.

Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Ms. Vlora Dumoshi and UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Maria Suokko signed the agreement in an event that took place today.

After signing the agreement Minister Dumoshi stated: “Through this agreement the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports has shown its commitment in contributing directly for the citizens of Kosovo, especially youngsters - who represent half of the population and an extremely untapped potential”.

“We at UNDP are very happy to be able to work with Kosovo institutions in the implementation of this scheme which will provide new opportunities for young adults to get valuable work experience and develop professionally. The impacts of the pandemic on young people, particularly among women, and those in vulnerable situations have been systematic, deep and disproportionate”, said Ms. Suokko on this occasion.

The purpose of the Internship programme is to provide unemployed jobseekers, who have graduated from vocational secondary and higher education institutions within a 24-month period, with the opportunity to pursue a 6-month internship in private sector enterprises or public institutions, in order to support their skills development at workplace, towards creating opportunities for sustainable employment in Kosovo. This initiative is part of the government package for recovery from COVID 19. The programme focuses on identifying enterprises/institutions that have the potential to offer long-term employment opportunities. The Internship Programme will engage the expertise of the project and of the Employment Office to match each internship position with the appropriate jobseekers, in accordance with the needs and criteria set by the companies/Institutions.

400 graduated unemployed youth in Kosovo will benefit practical skills, improving their livelihood and integration in the labour market. Persons eligible to apply for the internship scheme need to be university or vocational high school graduates within the 24-month period, jobseekers who have no previous work experience, and under the age of 30. Priority will be given to long-term unemployed (more than 12 months), women, gender-based violence survivors, social assistance recipients, single persons, with one or more dependent members (single parents), persons from rural areas, persons with disabilities, and persons from ethnic minority groups.
