Making our Capital ResilientMay 5, 2014
On 5 May 2014, Municipality of Prishtinë/Priština, in partnership with UNISDR, Regional Project “Strengthening Resilience to Disasters in Western Balkan and Turkey” launched officially the global campaign “Making Cities Resilient”.
Supported by UNDP, Municipality of Prishtinë/Priština joined the campaign on May 2010, as one of the first Municipalities which pledged to work in building the culture of resilience. The event was chaired by Mr. Shpend Ahmeti – Mayor of the Municipality of Prishtina, key speakers were Mr. Ismet Ibishi – deputy Minister of Internal Affairs/national coordinator for emergency management, Mr. Andrew Russell – UN Development Coordinator and Mr. Demetrio Innocenti – UNISDR Brussels.
Mayor of Prishtinë/Priština, strongly highlighted that municipality is prone to disasters. Recently it was exposed to drought (January, February 2014), whereas in past weeks floods and heavy rainfall made a considerable damage to a number of villages. Mayor Ahmeti said that Municipality of Prishtinë/Priština is aware of the weaknesses and is willing to cooperate closely with UNKT and UNISDR in building capacities to cope with disasters and invest in prevention.
Participants at the event were also scientific institutions such as Hydro meteorological Institute of Kosovo and Seismological institute who presented the disaster profile of Prishtina based on the monitoring network that Institutes have and registered data. Red Cross of Kosova and Emergency Operation Center 112 presented also their commitment in Disaster Prevention and Management and offered the support to Municipality of Prishtinë/Priština in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction.
UNISDR and UNDP jointly presented the commitment of UN in Disaster Risk Reduction and the importance of the campaign and invited also other Municipalities in Kosovo to join the campaign towards reducing risks from disasters.
The event ended with a number of recommendations for Municipality of Prishtinë/Priština which should be taken into account in order to advance the resilience of the city such as: seismic micro zonation, urban planning, alarming system, better coordination among line disaster reduction partners, etc.
The event was jointly implemented by UNISDR Regional Project “Strengthening Resilience to Disasters in Western Balkan and Turkey” and UNDP “Kosovo Disaster Risk Reduction Initiative” project.
