UNDP and UNIDIR evaluate the Kosovo Firearms Programme

Jul 15, 2013

16-18 July 2013- UNDP Kosovo Small Arms Control Project in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) is organizing testing of International Small Arms Control Software, in order to evaluate the Kosovo Firearms program in Kosovo (including the implementation of the Small Arm and Light Weapon Control and collection strategy and action plan), during the week of 15 to 19 July 2013.

United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) has developed a knowledge-management software tool that will assist UN agencies, Member States, and implementing organizations who wish to use the International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS) in measuring, prioritizing and evaluating their small arms control commitments by maximizing the utility and practicality of ISACS. Mr. Himayu Shiotani, the Project Manager and Researcher at UNIDIR, will be leading the testing of ISACS during his mission this week in Kosovo.

The aim of the testing in Kosovo is that UNDP KOSSAC will utilize the tool with the national coordinating body on small arms to conduct internal “self-evaluations” of existing small arms programmes, monitor progress of their implementation efforts over time, and generate data for strategic and policy planning (including development and review of Standard Operational Procedures) as well as voluntary reporting.
