Marking the Earth Day through Inter-Municipal Cooperation
Egzon Lironi, a 13th grader from 'Arbëria' school in Gjilan/Gnjilane, carrying a big black garbage bag and wearing a T-shirt with a 'Go green' slogan, is very exited to be in Stanishore Pine zone, some 2 km away from the town of Gjilan /Gnjilane .
"It's very cool to be here. I am with my friends and our teacher and today for all of us is a very special day. We have gathered to mark the Earth Day, on this beautiful Sunday, with music and dancing but far more important with a mission that needs to be fulfilled: to preserve our nature by cleaning and raising awareness that the environment needs to be kept clean at all times".
This particular activity was implemented by UNDP Support to Decentralization Project, financed by Government of Norway. The aim is to support the promotion of inter-municipal cooperation as a tool for enabling sustainable and equitable public service delivery at the local level in Kosovo. Also creating joint inspectorial services for forestry protection from illegal wood cuttings and wildfires, working on the joint protected zone and create a recreational centre for its citizens and visitors.
Municipal mayors, partners in this joint activity Mr. Qemajl Mustafa and Mr. Bajrush Ymeri, Norwegian Ambassador, his Excellency Jan Braathu, UNDC/UNDP RR Osnat Lubrani, and many environmental activists were present at the ceremony.
"Education is essential, and with this symbolic act and with the help from the people of Norway and UNDP, through education we aim to preserve one of the most important resources, our land ", said mayor of Gjilan / Gnjilane Mr. Mustafa. Norwegian Ambassador, his Excellency Jan Braathu reminded all the present that young people are the future and that environment is a very serious issue in our modern society. "Every day must be earth day. You are not alone, these problems have been highlighted all over the world", said Ambassador Braathu.
"The Earth Day is a reminder to show our gratefulness to Mother Nature, which sustains all forms of life. This is the day to focus our thoughts and our energies to make collective efforts towards protecting the environment. Even better, we are combining inter-municipal cooperation in raising awareness on our Mother Nature", stated UNDC/UNDP RR Osnat Lubrani in her opening speech, and not hiding her enthusiasm by ending her speech that: "When I see all these young activists wearing the nice "Go green" shirts, I am simply speechless".
Some 300 inhabitants of the two municipalities took part in this event. Many of them worked hard on this day to keep their park clean, Egzon among them. He was very proud of his work; his black garbage bag was almost full.
